Magic Library Shows
Amazing magic shows designed specifically for libraries!  Perfect for Summer Reading Programs for Maine Libraries, New Hampshire Libraries, and Massachusetts Libraries. (Still booking for Children's Book Week in April!)
Presented by magicians and children's performers Markus & Angelique Steelgrave.

In 2010, Maine and New Hampshire Libraries enjoyed our reading-relevant magic show that fit the
Summer Reading Program theme,
"Make A Splash:  Read!"

Opening performance of Make A Splash magic show at a Maine library

July 27, 2010

Dear Angelique and Markus,

First, on behalf of the Board of Directors, let me thank you both for the awesome evening of MAGIC you provided for the Palermo Library.  We were all thrilled with your performance, as anticipated.  And the audience reaction equaled ours.  The evening provided the perfect kick-off to our summer outreach programs.  We are seeing the results of our hard work and are pleased to note that our fundraising efforts have allowed us to offer the public, especially the children, a quality program such as yours.

From my own perspective I found I was torn between watching your unique blend of magic and humor or the faces of the youngsters around me.  They showed absolute delight and awe, with eyes wide open trying to take it all in.  Faces filled with pure wonder are difficult to ignore.

So, again, I thank you for sharing your gifts with us all.  Hopefully we will do this again.  Just have to sell some more books!

My best to both of you,

Ellie Budzko, Program Coordinator
Palermo Library Guild
Palermo, ME   (Note:  Booked another performance with us in 2011)

Hi!  We are Markus (Almodarr) and Angelique Steelgrave, full-time Maine magicians and children's performers.  Learn more about us here.  Each year we draw upon our love for children, our shared talents, and diverse performing arts backgrounds to create special programs just for libraries--fun, interactive, magical theatre variety shows that promote the enjoyment of reading and books.  Although our show for summer 2012 is not as extensively-themed as shows in years past, we are offering a magic show that includes elements of the current theme--"Dream Big...Read!"

At the time of this update, libraries in all 50 states are members of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, which selects a different theme each year in their programs designed to keep kids reading all summer long.  Dozens of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts libraries have featured our shows in recent years; as professionals with over 30 years of experience performing for young people, we take the creation of these shows seriously, and strive to meet the unique needs of libraries:

Appealing to a wide range of ages ---Yes!  Your Library's programs attract everyone from young children to adults.  Our show is designed with that in mind; it's great for ages 4 to 94!  (Be aware that children younger than 4 may not fully appreciate or understand a magic show, but they are welcome to attend with older siblings and parents.)

Promotes reading and an enjoyment of books --- Absolutely!  In fact, after our show you'll find that all the books on magic may "disappear" quickly!  We emphasize during the show that anything can be learned and many adventures can be enjoyed by reading a book.  Both of us grew up basically haunting the library during the summer; Markus himself first became intrigued with magic as a child by reading a book about Houdini.  He learned his first tricks from books, and still prefers that method over today's more "popular" methods such as DVDs and YouTube.  At the end of every show, we leave them with the "magic number":  793.8!  As you know, this is where the books on magic and magicians can be found in the library.

Relevant to the current theme --- Definitely!  Check out our previous programs (below).  And if you prefer, we can always perform a show that is not themed.  NOTE:  Due to our extremely limited availability in Summer 2012, we again will NOT be creating an all-new program that is completely themed.  However, all our performances for libraries, themed or not, do put an emphasis on reading and books.

Self-contained and hassle-free --- Always!  Although our shows are still not as simple as a guy with a rolling case of magic, we bring everything we need to set up and perform a fully-staged show, including a full backdrop, and sound system so everyone can hear.  All we need is a cleared indoor space and an audience ready to have a blast!  We also provide publicity information (in digital format) to help you pack the house on Show Day!

Affordable --- In just about every case!  Please contact us for current rates just for libraries.

Angelique's 14 years of experience with Krackerjack Theatre Co. and the Driftwood Players, creating performances based upon classic and contemporary literature for children, impart a depth of research, literary relevance and theatrical dimension; Markus' 41 years of performing for children of every walk of life--and his adaptability and talent to relate to and engage a young audience (plus his amazing skills of legerdemain!)--add a dynamic child-friendly element to each performance.  Together, we offer a "theatrically magical" program that goes beyond the usual "magic show" to reach and inspire young readers in a way other shows just can't do!

It's a performing arts experience kids and families will love.  More importantly, it'll GET THEM INTO THE LIBRARY TO READ!

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

u Minimum 12' wide x 12' deep indoor* space
u Electrical outlet nearby
u 1 1/2 hours' set-up time; 1 hour take-down time
u Shows runs approx. 50 minutes
u Best for ages 4 and up (but nobody will be turned away!)

* Although it would be nice to perform outside on summer days, due to the nature of the scenery, props and staging, all shows must be held indoors.  This eliminates a lot of variables, and assures you of the best performance possible.  On rare occasion we MAY be able to perform outdoors; call for specifics.

FEES:

Fees are affordable, and extremely reasonable; please contact us for current rates.
Again, Markus and I are both avid readers, and spent many happy hours in the library during our childhood summers.  We feel it is important that children develop a life-long love of reading--especially in this digital age.  And many children will not otherwise get to experience quality live performances such as your Library provides.  As the economy is not in a big hurry to improve, and budgets everywhere are being squeezed to death, we're continuing to keep our fees as affordable as possible (while still needing to meet our budget!).  In this way, we hope to reach more libraries...and in turn get MANY more children involved with books!

$ave money by blockbooking--if possible, book your show on the same day as another nearby library!  You'll both get a discount, AND split mileage charges!  Block booking is generally required for libraries more than 100 miles from East Waterboro, ME, although we may be available for a single show at that great a distance (be aware that travel costs will be higher if not block booked).
Mileage is currently 50 cents per mile each way, from East Waterboro, ME.  We reserve the right to change this amount based on the government rate, as gas prices are projected to increase substantially by summer.  Once your Library is booked and contracted, however, your rate will NOT go up.  (Hint:  book early!)

Note:  We are not the least expensive magicians around, so if you are only price-comparing for the cheapest act, we probably won't be your choice this time.  Then again, we're also far from the most expensive!  However, we are the only ones who offer this type of show, and who have this level of combined experience performing for young people.  By booking one of our library magic performances, you will certainly enjoy an excellent value for your programming dollars.

AVAILABILITY:

Extremely limited availability during Summer 2012.  Our many other magical programs are available the rest of the year:  school vacation weeks, on weekends, weeknights after school.   Call for specifics.

MAINE LIBRARIES:  We are available to perform for libraries in the Southern Maine Library District and certain portions of the Central Maine Library District only.

NEW HAMPSHIRE LIBRARIES:  We are available to perform for libraries in Strafford County, Rockingham County, Belknap County and Carroll County only.

MASSACHUSETTS LIBRARIES:  During the summer we are available on a limited basis to libraries in the Cape Cod region (Barnstable County).

Call us now and enliven your library programming with an amazing performance by Magic of The Steelgraves!

WHAT DO OTHER LIBRARIES SAY?

"Hands down, you are the best act I have booked in the 7+ years I have been here.
I had a great time watching both of you perform such amazing magic.
The interaction and comedy with the audience was great.
I look forward to having you back!"

Goodall Memorial Library, Sanford, ME (has booked 11 shows to date)

"Thank you for a wonderfully entertaining family event!  There was surprise and wonder for every person in the audience and the excitement expressed by the younger children only added to the magical atmosphere your performance created for all of us.  It truly was a great night of magical fun for the whole family.  As one audience participant exclaimed,
'NOW THAT'S MAGIC!' "
D.A. Hurd Library, North Berwick, ME

"What an absolutely fantastic program you presented to our youngsters and their families yesterday!  You both are so polished and professional.  Everyone (including me) simply loved your presentation--from the scenery, to the magic, humor, juggling, and to the precious animals.  Thank you so much!"
Rockport Public Library, Rockport, MA

"Your performance was wonderful!!  Markus, you pick up on your audience so well,
and I must say your talents are impressive.  You make a great team.
Thanks from the folks in Detroit!"

Fernald Library, Detroit, ME

"We were very excited to have The Magic of The Steelgraves for our closing summer reading party.  When looking for entertainers, the Steelgraves were one of the first people we thought of to call, and we were not disappointed.  They used our summer reading theme, 'Dragons, Dreams and Daring Deeds' as the theme for their show, and their backdrops, props and costumes reflected that theme.  The staging was vividly colorful and was a perfect backdrop to their upbeat show.   Markus and Angelique aptly entertained a range of babies to preteen children from start to finish, a feat in itself. They interacted well with the audience and delighted them by bringing some onstage to help
with several magic tricks.  Markus also did an excellent job explaining how he takes care of
his birds and rabbits used throughout the show.
We highly recommend The Magic of The Steelgraves, and were pleased to see the children's fascination with the magic tricks that Markus and Angelique performed."

Hollis, Salmon Falls, Bar Mills and Waterboro Public Libraries, ME  (Has booked 2 shows)

"Well, the compliments keep coming!  I have heard nothing but wonderful comments since your performance here last Friday.  One gentleman said he had seen many, many children's shows throughout his years of being in a school system, but none compared to your performance.
I found the whole experience to be a happy one.  You are very accommodating, professional
and easy to work with and the way you intertwined the pirate theme and the joys of reading
into your act was absolutely perfect.  (One teacher in the audience thought so too.)

It was the most successful Summer Reading Program we have ever had and I have no idea
how I will ever be able to top it all.  I'm afraid you have spoiled my readers for anything else!
Thank you for being all that I expected and so much more!"
Wolfeboro Public Library, Wolfeboro, NH  (Has booked 3 shows)

"AHOY!!!  Once again, we all enjoyed the show tremendously last Tuesday
I surprised the kids the next day with that poster you autographed for me;
I even put it in a frame!!!  All the comments were positive, they loved the 'tricks'!
Many want you to come again!!  It was
'Awesome', 'Really fun!', 'It was funny yet amazing!',
'I loved it!'.
.. and I had a great time too!  Thanks again!!"
Pillsbury Free Library, Warner, NH

"Your performance last summer was terrific, and so many people have asked
when we are going to have you back again!"
Falmouth Memorial Library, Falmouth, ME  (Has booked 8 shows)

"Almodarr and his comely Irish colleen sidekick had the children of Tamworth in thrall
for an hour.  Interspersed with silly comic turns, he made all manner of items appear and disappear, juggled, joshed with the audience, pulled children on to the stage and generally
had the whole room charmed and laughing."

Cook Memorial Library, Tamworth, NH

Here's a look at some of our other PAST PERFORMANCES:
Sorry, photos are not available of "Catch the Reading Bug" (2008) and "Be Creative @ Your Library (2009).

2003--A JOURNEY THROUGH THE WIZARD'S WORLD
This was very popular during the summer one of the Harry Potter books was released!  Lush costumes, grand illusions, and a full medieval castle backdrop.

2004--DISCOVER NEW TRAILS @ YOUR LIBRARY  (ME)
2006--TREASURE READING
(NH)
Our pirate themed show was adaptable to both themes.  In 2006 we were one of only 13 performing artists selected for the NH "Kids, Books and the Arts" Roster; as "Treasure Reading", it's still available to schools, and to libraries on a limited basis.

2005--DRAGONS, DREAMS & DARING DEEDS
Fantasy, fairytale, folklore, original poetry, classical music, juggling, and magic...with a lovely "medieval" flair

2006--PAWS, CLAWS, SCALES...AND TALES!
Live doves and rabbits enlivened this celebration of all things having paws, claws, scales and/or tails!  Animal care, abundant animal imagery, the role of animals in daily life and in classic and contemporary literature, and lots of laughs for everyone.

2007--GET A CLUE @ YOUR LIBRARY!
A spoof of the pulp novels of yesteryear--Bugsy and Bitsy of the "Hu, Dunnett and Howe" Detective Agency unraveled clues provided by the Dewey Decimal System!  More like a play than a magic show, with a plot and script, the magic tricks were seamlessly woven into the story.  With help from the audience, of course the wily "Public Enemy  No. 793.8" was apprehended [cameo appearance by Cow the Magical Rabbit...in jailhouse duds!], and everyone had a fantastic time.

Dates are extremely limited for Summer 2012, and they book up quickly!
Most of our summer is spent performing for resorts, corporate events, and town events throughout New England, so call right away to secure your date.  If not able to be part of your Summer Reading Program, our Magic Library Shows are also available throughout the year.
